Labor Day (US and Canada)

Monday September 6

The very first U.S. Labor Day parade took place in 1882 to call attention to the contributions of workers. Now we carry on this tradition of celebrating our hard work with a holiday on the first Monday of September.

Rosh Hashanah

September 6–8

L'shanah tovah! Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year, and is followed by a 10 day period known as "The Days of Awe", a time for reflecting upon and repenting for one's actions in the past year. It is often celebrated with a 25 hour period of fasting, followed by a period of ten days known as "The Days of Awe" during which Jewish families might spend time at a synagogue, and consume foods like apple slices dipped in honey to symbolize a sweet new year ahead.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Canada)

September 30

Also known as Orange Shirt Day (observed since 2013), September 30th was declared a statutory holiday in 2021—part of a country-wide response to the tragic discovery at Kamloops Indian Residential School. This day honors Indigenous survivors, families, and communities; and brings public acknowledgement to the tragic legacy of Canada's Indian Residential Schools, as a part of the ongoing process of reconciliation.

Now introducing the Safety Committee's Home Safety challenge series!
"Safety Has No Quitting Time"

Challenge 1: Creating a Home Safety Plan

Roll up your sleeves and get ready--we're challenging you to bring safety home. Starting in September, the Safety Committee is issuing the first in its series of "home safety" challenges. To kick things off, the first challenge will be to create a home disaster plan and to run a practice drill with your families and other home residents.

In preparation for this challenge, the Safety Committee will hold bi-monthly lunch and learns, during which we'll review our office Emergency Response Plans (ERP) as a starting point for your home ERPs. Sessions will feature written steps, pictures, and videos to help you get inspired. We encourage you to take what you learn and work with other residents in your home to create the plan--safety is for everyone, after all!

Participants can submit their plans to the Safety Committees in the form of written plans, photos, and videos. At the end of the month, the Safety Committees will hold a lunch and learn to review the thoroughness of the submitted drills and plans and select a winner to receive a prize: a home safety pack.
