Proclamation of the Republic

Proclamation of the Republic (Brazil)

Tuesday November 15

On November 15, 1889, a group of Brazilian Army officers led by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca staged a non-violent coup d'état, deposed Emperor Pedro II, and formed a provisional government with de Fonseca as President of the Republic, all in one day. Presumably, they then all crossed "topple constitutional monarchy" off their to-do lists and went to take a nap. (Image: Proclamation of the Republic, 1893, by Benedito Calixto)

Thanksgiving (US)

Thursday November 24

Its origins are hotly debated, but historians mostly agree that Thanksgiving, as an American holiday, is rooted in the "thanksgiving" days of prayer familiar to 17th-century settlers - most famously, the Pilgrims - combined with a harvest feast. These days, the U.S. observes Thanksgiving as a secular holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. Feasting is still a large part of the celebration, as are family, friends, and giving thanks for the blessings of the past year.
