Flu Season: Protect Your Community
November 1–Ongoing
With COVID-19 still circulating and holidays around the corner, flu shots are more important than ever. Protect yourself and your community by planning your flu shot today. It's simple! For those on DG benefits in the US, call a participating pharmacy in advance to check hours and availability, present your Cigna ID card at the pharmacy, and receive your flu shot. You can find more info on the flu shot and other Cigna-covered vaccinations here. For those in Canada and Brazil, contact Megan Beecroft or Debora Nesteruk with any questions.

Remembrance Day (CAN)
Thursday November 11

Canadians observe Remembrance Day with moments of silence, attendance at ceremonies, and wearing of red poppies.

Proclamation of the Republic (Brazil)
Monday November 15
On November 15, 1889, a group of Brazilian Army officers led by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca staged a non-violent coup d'état, deposed Emperor Pedro II, and formed a provisional government with de Fonseca as President of the Republic, all in one day. Presumably, they then all crossed "topple constitutional monarchy" off their to-do lists and went to take a nap. (Image: Proclamation of the Republic, 1893, by Benedito Calixto)

Black Awareness Day (Brazil)
Saturday November 20
Also known as Zumbi Day in honor of Zumbi dos Palmares, a 17th-century king of the escaped-slave community Quilombo dos Palmares and resistance fighter, Dia da Consciência Negra has been celebrated since the 1960s. It's a day of reflection and education as well as a celebration of the Black community in Brazil. (Image: Zumbi, 1927, by Antônio Parreiras)

Thanksgiving (US)
Thursday November 25
Its origins are hotly debated, but historians mostly agree that Thanksgiving, as an American holiday, is rooted in the "thanksgiving" days of prayer familiar to 17th-century settlers – most famously, the Pilgrims – combined with a harvest feast. These days, the U.S. observes Thanksgiving as a secular holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. Feasting is still a large part of the celebration, as are family, friends, and giving thanks for the blessings of the past year.
