International Day of Persons with Disabilities

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (Canada)

Tuesday December 6

Established by the Parliament of Canada in 1991, this day commemorates those who have experienced gender-based violence. It falls on the anniversary of the École Polytechnique massacre when 14 women were killed by an armed student said to be “fighting feminism”. This day also serves as a call to action to educate oneself and speak out against gender-based violence.

Hanukkah

Sunday December 18-Monday December 26

Happy Hanukkah! The Festival of Lights commemorates the recovery of Jerusalem and the Second Temple during the Maccabean Revolt. Lighting a menorah and frying up latkes during the holiday celebrates the miracle of oil, when a day's worth of oil burned for eight days and nights. With special foods, blessings, rituals, songs, and gifts, Hanukkah is a bright time at the beginning of the winter.
